In this course, you will learn how to achieve a magical, glow-in-the-dark effect with regular paints. This course will teach you how to create the appearance of a neon-like glow - an optical illusion - by using a particular combination of ordinary pigments in either oils or acrylics. This course will explain the secret behind this striking visual phenomenon step by step: how depending on the amount of white or black you create this expression of radiance. Several examples that showcase this style and a live demonstration of how to achieve this in your painting will help you experience the enlightenment.

On the first day of the course you will create a value scale and refer to it while creating a quick floral painting in grisaille (black and white) from a suitable photo reference (which will be supplied).

For the larger painting that you’ll work on for the rest of the course, students are encouraged to find their own photo references and on the first day of the course will be given a handout with clear guidelines as to the types of photographs that would be optimal. The best subjects for this technique are portraits and outdoor scenes with a surreal or “surprise” component.
