How do we tell at a glance the difference between sculptures made of bronze, clay, or marble? We almost effortlessly distinguish the material the sculpture is made of, and we don’t need any expertise for that.

To draw the sculpture, however, it is not enough to be able to tell the difference. For an artist who wants to possess the ability to render with a high degree of realism, it is important to know how each surface, shiny or matte, “behaves” in the light, and how to use pastels to express those nuances.

This course will provide you with the techniques for how to draw three sculpted busts made of different materials and do it masterfully. Mastery means the ability to see and record the changes in color, reflections, shadows, and highlights, caused by the light. You will learn how to handle everything with soft pastel - an excellent medium for nuanced color-mixing and building confidence in drawing.

You will walk away with the whole vocabulary of means for drawing shiny or matte objects and with several outstanding drawings of sculptures that you will be proud to exhibit or include in your portfolio.

Each student will be able to choose the size of paper for each drawing: small, medium or large.

The instructor will send photo references for each project.

Completion of the Essential Drawing Course is recommended.
