Six Approaches to Portraiture

Learn the styles of six different painters: Fayum portraits, Frank Auerbach, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neel, Alex Katz, and Luc Tuymans, and paint six self-portraits, using a mirror. Each artist has been chosen for their recognizable technique in portraiture and the diversity of mediums. Learning to paint in their style will help you flex your creative muscle and try yourself at Contemporary Realism in three different styles, Abstract Expressionism, Symbolism, Minimalism, and mixed media. You will also learn how to use your art materials in new combinations.  

The instructor will demonstrate each technique in real time, showing you in easy steps the specifics of the artist’s brushwork, use of medium, and other tips. By trying the variety of approaches, you will get closer to finding a style of your own.

Learn art history and discover new artists while making a very personal polyptych. This course will open up a new world for you - the world of portraiture, as this range of portraiture can influence your ability to see your own face newly.
