Urban Sketching: Parks, Landmarks & People

When you travel—or even just wander your own neighborhood—you likely rely on your phone or camera to capture memorable views. But what if you could sketch those moments by hand, quickly and effortlessly, in your own unique style? In this course, you’ll learn how to capture the charm and energy of urban life, from historic architecture and peaceful parks to bustling streets and the people that animate them. Urban Sketching is for romantic souls that like to travel.

Urban sketching is more than drawing buildings—it’s about noticing the world around you and recording your experience; it's more personal and memorable than a photograph. The details of a scene—kiosks, benches, food carts, couples on a walk—create the texture of a city, and you’ll learn how to simplify and sketch it all with confidence and personality. Even a casual walk through a nearby park can become a compelling subject once you learn the techniques.

Each week, you'll explore a new sketching skill—from quick figure drawing to trees, fountains, facades, and scenic views. We’ll cover:

• how to select motifs
• sketching in pencil, pen & ink, watercolor, and mixed media
• using perspective (even if you're a beginner)
• populating your sketches with people
• choosing portable art supplies for sketching on the go
• working quickly, loosely, and with confidence

You'll receive optional home sketching assignments each week to put your learning into practice wherever you are—so whether you're sitting on a park bench, at a café, or exploring a new city, you’ll be ready.
