Week 2:
Finish your contour drawing (linear outline).
Tips on how to self-critique:
- Step back, at least 5 feet away from your piece. Have the photo in your hand, and look back and forth between it and your drawing
- Take a photo of your drawing, then look at the photo. It's as if stepping back (this is not a replacement for stepping back).
- Turn your drawing and your reference upside down to see shapes instead of things
- Squint to ignore details and see general abstracted shapes
- Use the crosshairs and plumb lines to check placement of shapes
- Look with the "Hugging Gaze" and compare the size, angle, and placement of shapes to each other
Bring a soft pencil, such as 4B or 6B to the next class so we can add tonal values.
Week 1:
Finish your drawing from class. Remember that all details and definition come from lights and shadows. Prioritize making the shadows dark. Even if you don't describe the facial features explicitly, they will be suggested. Zoom in to Zorn's work to see what IÂ mean.
