Pick one: oils or acrylics.
Supplies, regardless if you're using oils or acrylics:
- Charcoal or pencil for sketching on canvas
- Drawing pad for sketching and note-taking
- 11x14" canvas pad
- 9x12" stretched canvas
- 16x20" stretched canvas
- Palette knife
- Roll of paper towels or cotton rags
- Palette paper
- Masterson palette holder
- Bristle paint brushes (for direct mixing) and hair paint brushes (for glazing). Bring the ones you already have, or the recommended brushes are: flats, brights, rounds, and filberts - in various sizes
- Painting clothes
- Plastic disposable gloves
Supplies for oils:
- Must-have oil pigments: Viridian, Titanium White, Mars Black, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Cadmium Red Medium, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Magenta
- Optional pigments in addition to above: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Sap Green, Terre Verte, Cobalt Green, Lemon Yellow, Zinc White
- Metal or glass jar with an airtight lid for solvents (no plastic!)
- Linseed oil
- A room with good ventilation
Supplies for acrylics
- Must-have acrylic pigments: Phthalo Green - warm shade, Titanium White, Mars Black, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Cadmium Red Medium, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Magenta.
- Optional pigments in addition to above: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Sap Green, Terre Verte, Cobalt Green, Lemon Yellow, Zinc White.
- Cup for water for washing brushes
- Mist bottle, to keep your paints wet;
- Retardant (also called Retarder or Extender);
