Contrapposto (Italian for “counterpose”) is a classic standing pose, popular from antiquity to today. It has been a favorite pose with artists and sculptors because it depicts a model in a semi-relaxed posture, with the weight on one leg while the other leg is bent at the knee. This shift in weight causes the hips, shoulders, and head to tilt, creating a very attractive appearance, as it conveys a sense of subtle, natural movement, and lifelike vitality. This classic pose is also perfect for academic pencil drawing because it helps understand the anatomy and skeletal structure.

You will be taken step by step through drawing an accurate realistic rendering of a nude figure in contrapposto from observation. Every artistic issue will be explained to help you apply them one-by-one so that you can complete and refine your drawing in five weeks. You will be introduced to the 40 key points: composition, proportions, form, perspective, anatomy, light, shadows, tonality, weight, and more, to help you build the foundational skills of traditional figurative drawing. The instructor will demonstrate each step and provide personalized feedback on how to enhance your drawing and achieve perfect, portfolio-level doneness.

Completion of the Essential Drawing Course is recommended. For intermediate and advanced artists. This drawing will be a very powerful addition to your portfolio.
