At Prima Materia, we believe Larry Caveney is one of the most exciting contemporary portrait artists working today. His distinctive approach to celebrity portraiture is the inspiration for this course.

While Caveney's portraits appear spontaneous and effortless, they are the result of a rigorous process of observation, experimentation, and repetition. Rather than creating a single image, he produces multiple studies of the same person, exploring different ways to capture their likeness and character. This process strengthens both technical skill and personal expression while generating a cohesive body of work.

Caveney's portraits are refreshingly candid, often humorous, and unapologetically unconventional. Faces may appear in unexpected colors like red, blue, or neon pink, yet they remain instantly recognizable. His loose brushwork, drips, and expressive marks demonstrate that strong likeness does not require strict realism.

In this course, students will explore Caveney's mixed-media approach by combining pen-and-ink with watercolor. You will create approximately twenty small portrait studies and four larger celebrity portraits from photographic references. Through repetition and variation, students will learn to develop confidence, originality, and a more personal artistic voice.

We will also discuss the legal and ethical considerations of depicting celebrities and public figures - an important topic for any artist working with recognizable faces.

Who Will Benefit from This Course?
