In this course you will be guided towards becoming an artist who is self-expressed and free with discovering your own ways in collage. As a medium, collage is very different from drawing or painting not just because the materials are scissors and colored paper but because it calls for expressive shortcuts (pun intended) instead of realism. For some students it is a challenge to be free from copying reality, so they will enjoy learning how to have more freedom with the human body and more radical use of color. Scissors are a fantastic tool when it comes to expressing an actual model in front of you - there is actually a way to achieve a flow, similar to learning how to use a paintbrush for the first time. Learn that the figure can be expressed with turquoise, or violet, or blue color - and still look convincing.

In the beginning, we’ll create a color library following Matisse’s process of making a set of handmade colored papers. Working with the whole spectrum of colors will engage your intuition, ignite your creativity, and encourage more inventiveness with the human form.

It is easy to produce unexpectedly graceful artworks in collage. To explore the flexibility and elegance of this medium, we’ll start small. Then your gradual expansion into the larger size will feel natural and exciting.
