For anyone who wants to advance in portraiture, this course will help you master the eyes. Eyes are the key feature of every portrait; when eyes are painted well, the portrait comes to life. The course will begin with drawing the external eye structure in pencil, using antique sculpture’ plaster copies. Then we will transfer it to color on canvas. In the next class, after studying the Masters specifically chosen for their exceptional rendering of eyes, we’ll proceed to painting from observation. We will use a mirror to paint our own eye on a miniature canvas.

In the two final classes, we will enrich realism with some creativity and apply what we’ve learned about drawing and painting eyes to a larger canvas, now with a surreal twist.

Course schedule

Week 1: Learn the structure of the eye in pencil; Olya’s live demo.

Week 2: Drawing from a plaster copy in graphite on paper.

Week 3: Copy the eyes from a Great Master’s portrait - in paint on canvas.

Week 4: Using a mirror, paint your own eye from observation on a miniature canvas.

Week 5: Combining realism and creativity. On a larger canvas, over a gray “imprimatura”, create a dozen eyes (or more!), expressive and stylized, using the knowledge received in the prior classes.
