When we create a good portrait - that we ourselves feel good about - it is typically the one where colors somehow work, face is proportioned, features nicely defined, and that we feel expresses our style. When this happens, we are proud of it, and we notice that other people are also drawn to it. When we see such a portrait, created by another artist, we admire it and feel inspired.

This is the type of portrait we will create. Following the steps of traditional portraiture, we’ll focus on the technical aspects of portraits, strengthening our drawing skills, learning all the ins and outs of soft pastel, but also strive to emphasize the beauty of light on the skin, expressive features of the character, texture on the hair and clothing, and most importantly - try to express it in our own unique style.

We will go from the very beginning - composing - all the way to nuancing and refining our portrait with highlights. We will obtain this very practical skill of portraiture while enjoying the magical way of mixing and layering colors in pastel, becoming familiar with what each color in our box of soft pastels can do. Artworks done in soft pastel are referred to as paintings because of their painterly appearance; this course is great for those that love to paint and those whose passion is drawing.
