Experience the art of bas-relief with our unique papier-mâché process. The instructor will provide the recipe for papier-mâché and guide you in crafting your figurative piece that will resemble classic examples of barelief in clay or molded plaster.

Bas-relief, or low relief, involves sculpting a figure with some depth, so that your artwork appears to rise slightly from the surface (in comparison, sculpture possesses depth and can be appreciated from all angles, 360 degrees; barelief can be viewed from 180 degrees).

Through step-by-step instructions, you will learn how to apply papier-mâché to a substrate, transforming it into a tactile, sculpture-like voluminous form. This immersive process of shaping and molding transcends the boundaries between painting and sculpture. This course is like a step up from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional art.

The final step is adding color. We will paint the details of the model in acrylics or oils. This project will turn your home into an art atelier where you learn how to craft a timeless piece of 3D figurative art.

This course is suitable for the students who have already acquired some experience in drawing. Some experience with drawing the human body is helpful but not necessary. Graduates of the Essential Drawing Course are welcome.
